            Response to “Shrek: Parody or Form of Retaliation?”

Author’s analysis on the “Shrek” is very specific, he does a lot of research before he analyzes. Author lays out the problem between Jeffrey Katzenberg and Michael Eisner who is Disney and Disney’s former chairman. Author lets the audiences know the conflict ahead of time, which really help readers understand better.

As what author tells readers, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who thinks himself redefine the animation when he worked for Michael Eisner in Disney. But he didn’t gain what he deserves there, so he forms DreamWorks himself to retaliate. DreamWorks’s Shrek, is a hit at one time, Eisner and Disney have had their worst movie season ever. In Shrek, some characters are specially designed to satirize Michael Eisner and his Disney. But what interest readers is that the Icons of Lord Farquaad’s face lines the entire kingdom, similar to Disneyland with Mickey Mouse’s head and ears, which means Shrek uses similar technology with Disney to satirize Disney. But Shrek is actually a business, all the things Jeffrey Katzenberg does are for making more money. As a business, it’s hard to judge Shrek is created more for Retaliation or it just a Parody to make money,

                    Marriage Plot Arguments

  I agree with kheyfet’s idea that marriage as an ending is bad. Stories with a marriage ending reinforce traditional gender roles, which is ultimately limiting to all the characters. With a marriage ending, which means the story would have a happy ending and the main character will live happily ever after. This makes Cinderella, prince and other character can just move with the limit of tradition. And the story like Cinderella can never update as society advances, which really bores the audience. And Cinderella in the story never think of struggle for herself, she just stay there and wait prince to save her. In a word, Cinderella is so passive and innocent, which traditional women should be. And for the prince, he doesn’t even appear in the story, but all the readers know that prince is powerful and he can do everything he wants, which shows the traditional masculine. Young audience read stories like Cinderella would form ideas of traditional gender roles. And adults read this kind of story would reinforce the concept of traditional gender roles. It’s not good for people to accept new concept and pretend society from moving forward. In a word, marriage as an ending is bad, because marriage plots can really bore the audience and reinforce traditional gender roles, which is bad for young readers to build their personalities.

  Melissa Joan Hartis, an American actress, who is known for her title roles in the television series Clarissa Explains It All (1991–94), says: “I’m not a happy-ending person. I want to know what happens once Cinderella rides off with prince charming.” According what she says, Melissa Joan Hartis doesn’t like stories which have marriage plots and happy ending. She is a successful actress and she doesn’t want to be limited in tradition. She says want to know how Cinderella story goes if cinderella  rides off the prince, which means she hates marriage plots as a ending, she want creative ideas and surprise plots in the story. She doesn’t like happy ending, marriage plots and wants story to be more creative and surprising, which support my claim. Marriage plots limited the characters and bore the audience, so marriage plots as an ending is bad.

“I was thinking that when I have children, that I should always dress as a character for them, so they think their mom is Alice in Wonderland or Cinderella. It would be totally messed up!” Gwen Stefani, an American singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and actress says. Stefani conveys to us an idea that she doesn’t want her children think Cinderella as a standard, which means that Cinderella reinforce the traditional gender roles, Stefani want her children to develop their own personality and doesn’t want her children be limited by traditional genders. This also reflects a huge problem of Cinderella story. Marriage plots in the story are too old that only give characters traditional gender quality, so children can be easily miss leaded by story. This also support my claim. Marriage plots are bad because marriage plots reinforce the traditional gender roles, which is bad for children to build their own personalities,

  However, someone thinks that marriage plots are good. Someone says that Cinderella in the traditional story gets through a painful process before her married prince, which can teach young children a lesson that keeping up will finally be rewarded. I don’t agree with that. Cinderella gets through a painful process, which is true. But Cinderella does nothing but tolerate during the painful process. Marriage plots actually try to teach children that you will be rewarded if you do nothing but try hard to bear the pain. Again, this also supports my claim. The wrong concept that marriage plots convey to readers will totally miss lead children, so marriage plots are bad.

 In a word, marriage plots are bad because marriage plots can really bore the audience and reinforce traditional gender roles, which is bad for young readers to build their personalities.

           Response to “Insights from a Cinderella story”

This essay actually analyzes the Cinderella story deeply. Author raises different versions of Cinderella story as examples. Author doesn’t only introduce the plots of different Cinderella stories, but she also analyzes the deeper meaning of each story and how that reflects the society.

In Edward Jones’s version, the stepmother play a victim role, she and Cinderella are abandoned by a man. So the step mother must be strict to Cinderella to live. It’s a reflection of stepmother in the society, stepmothers are always strict with kids. Maybe that where strict stepmothers come from.

In the Cinderella by Edmund Dulac, Cinderella doesn’t remember he mother, and there are no magic powers. But she has a symbol of mother in her mind, which is a perfect symbol. And this symbol always encourages Cinderella continue her life. These plots tell the readers that there is always an inner power that pushes us forward.

And there are also many other versions, they have something in common. Cinderella always has one or more helpers, that also can be connected with the fact that we always feel alone and need others’ help. What’s more, the beautiful clothes always play an important role in the story, clothes change Cinderella. That also reflects that people want to be beautiful and Royal in their mind.

Cinderella is a story that would never be out of date, it contains so many wisdoms.
